Jane by Design è una delle ultime novità della ABC Family, la stessa emittente americana che trasmette Pretty Little Liars, The Lying Game e Make It or Break It, e che in passato è stata casa di successoni come Una mamma per amica (Gilmore Girls) e That 70s Show, che ha lanciato Ashton Kutcher e Mila Kunis.
La protagonista è per l’appunto Jane, liceale timida e un po’ outsider che sogna di diventare un giorno una designer di fama mondiale. Ad un colloquio per un tirocinio per uno scambio di persona viene assunta come assistente della stilista principale, incominciando così a vivere una doppia vita tra scuola e corse in atelier.
Deve far fronte ai comportamenti da aguzzina di Lulu, queen bee della scuola, ai sotterfugi di India al lavoro, e alle attenzioni dello stilista emergente che ovviamente non sa che è solo una teenager.
Ci troviamo quindi di fronte ad un mash up tra Il diavolo veste Prada ed il più classico dei format per teenager: protagonista outsider innamorata dello sportivo popolare che per una serie di circostanze riesce ad alzarsi dal suo status praticamente nullo, famiglia disastrata da classico Disney, migliore amico versione Dawson Leery (ma più carino) che tutti sperano che in futuro diventi qualcosa di più.
Nonostante la mancanza di originalità però per queste prime puntate sembra promettere bene, perchè riesce a conciliare le situazioni tipiche da liceali con quelle in ambito lavorativo, senza sembrare eccessivamente surreale. Ricorda per certi versi (la competitività, gli orari del lavoro,..) sia Ugly Betty (anch’essa della ABC) che l’inglese Material Girl, purtroppo cancellato troppo presto dalla BBC.

Non avendolo visto non so dirlo, ma da come lo racconti mi ricorda molto anche Jenny di Gossip Girl, che cominciava a lavorare in atelier nonostante la scuola. Senza contare che c’era anche la Queen Bee di turno, che era Blair. Poi chiaramente mi fa venire in mente anche Ugly Betty, che hai citato.
Non so, non mi ispira particolarmente nonostante parli del mondo della moda. Magari proverò a vederlo in un periodo con poche serie tv 😀
